In this article I’m looking at the Moment from the hearing aid manufacturer Widex.
Widex was founded in 1956 in Denmark and is represented in over 100 countries globally. It is one of the few hearing aid companies to continue to be a family-run company. With around 10% of the hearing aid market's global market share, its products are well-known worldwide.
The Widex sound is very well known in the hearing aid industry. Those that use Widex hearing aids continue to stay faithful to the company, which is evidence of their products' quality. The company launched the world's first 100 percent digital in-the-ear hearing aid in 1995 in close cooperation with international audiology experts and specialists. Founded in 1956, and with 3,800 employees worldwide, Widex hearing aids are now available in nearly 100 countries.
The Widex Moment is the company’s answer to a long-standing issue in the world of hearing loss treatment: unnatural sound. Sound quality and the 'naturalness' of sound remain among the most-cited reasons people don't pursue hearing assistance. But I think the Widex Moment may have solved the issue once and for all.
The hearing aids have a sleek design and are relatively small. They sit up and behind the ear and they have one push button on the back of each hearing aid. I love how small the hearing aids are. They slide just behind my ear and then they fit nicely. It's very small at the top of my ear. You would typically select a color that matches your hair or your skin tone so it blends in nicely.
They come with two different cases. One is a typical case that you can use as a carrying case. And the other is a rechargeable case that you plug into the wall and you charge the hearing aids overnight.
There's two ways to control the settings on your hearing aids. Number one would be touching buttons behind your ear. And number two would be connecting the hearing aids via Bluetooth to your smartphone to be able to make those adjustments through an app.
Typically, sound processed in a hearing aid reaches the eardrum later than sound heard directly. And when these two ‘out of sync’ signals mix, you get an artificial sound. Widex is promising the most natural, least distorted sound experience ever using the new ZeroDelay™ and PureSound™ technologies. This works by delivering sound to the eardrum faster than ever before, reducing the chance for frequency interference in the ear canal (when sound passing through the open ear mixes with amplified sound from the hearing aid).
This ZeroDelay technology is amazing because I experience only a minimal signal delay in the processing of sound. When I'm wearing a hearing aid and sound enters the microphone of the hearing aids, there is a computer delay to process that sound and then present it into your ears. So following this theory here means that if we reduce the amount of time it takes for the hearing aid to process sound, then it can potentially improve the quality of listening and make it sound more natural.
According to Widex, the MOMENT mRIC is the smallest rechargeable lithium-ion RIC on the market. Aside from achieving a tiny hearing aid size, the lithium-ion solution also helps to provide improved moisture protection. In the past, the silver-zinc batteries were interchangeable with disposable batteries, but lithium-ion batteries require sealed battery doors, and this means less vulnerability to moisture for internal components.
Despite these benefits of rechargeable technology, it isn’t the most portable. These hearing aids fit quite easily into their recharging station but this recharging station doesn't close. So you have to take the hearing aids out for this piece to close on top. Therefore, this recharging station is not very portable. So if you were to travel with these hearing aids then what you would probably do is take them out of the recharging station and use this kind of carrying case and put the hearing aids in the carrying case.
The Widex Moment app has a three-star rating out of 60 reviews on the Apple store. I have used the app myself. It is a great app with a lot of awesome features.
You can make all the adjustments you're looking for. The app works well at making changes to volume changes to the different programs making some fine tuning adjustments yourself. And if you need help you're not sure exactly what to change, there are some helpful guides and questions that the app can ask you and then you can answer and that can make the adjustments in your ears for you.
One of the best things about the Widex is its compatibility with remote care, a standout feature on the app. That means that after the initial appointment when your hearing aids are set for you and fit to your ears, that there's a possibility to make adjustments with the hearing aids, your phone or computer and then the audiology clinic via the internet. That can be helpful if you need a quick adjustment or something doesn't sound right and that can potentially save you a trip to the clinic.
If you have tinnitus and you're looking for help managing tinnitus with sound therapy or masking, then the Widex hearing aids come with what are called Zen tones as well as different other types of tinnitus sound therapy. Overall, they have a good rating for tinnitus features inside of the Widex hearing aids.
Widex pioneered SoundSense Learn machine learning technology in hearing aids with their EVOKE hearing aids, and the technology forms the foundation for the personalized sound enhancement used in the Widex MOMENT App. Research from Widex indicates that SoundSense Learn usage leads to greater listening comfort and subjective sound quality.
The Widex Moment is a cutting edge hearing aid that really does provide a more natural sound. They are however on the high end when it comes to price, so that is something to consider. With remote care, great sound and bluetooth and lithium-ion features, the Widex Moment justified its status as the leading hearing aid model in the Widex line-up.
Today, we are going to review the Widex Moment rechargeable hearing aids. Maybe you were recommended these by your hearing doctor or you're interested in finding the right hearing aids for yourself, I am going to walk you through the detailed review of the Widex Moment hearing aids, talking about the look, the feel, how it actually looks on my ear, different features inside of the hearing aids. And of course the important pros and cons. Make sure to watch this video until the end to get all that information and welcome to HearWeb.
Hi there, my name is Dr. Ben Thompson. I'm one of the Audiologist with HearWeb. We try to review them all in detail to help you with your decisions. Today, let's start with the look and feel of the Widex Moment hearing aids. They come with two different cases. One is a typical case that you can use as a carrying case. And the other is a rechargeable case that you plug into the wall and you charge the hearing aids overnight. The hearing aids have a sleek design. They're relatively small. They sit up and behind the ear and they have one push button on the back of each hearing aid. The rechargeable case is easy to use. There's no resistance of taking the hearing aid out and putting the hearing aid in back to the charging station. One important factor of getting the right hearing aid fitting is a proper hearing test. And if your hearing test shows that you have profound hearing loss then these smaller hearing aids aren't the best option for you. But if you have mild, moderate some levels of severe hearing loss then the Widex Moment would be appropriate for you when you're working with an audiologist. And the reason for that is because the tip that goes in the ear canal, it's a rubber tip that can be changed for different sizes and different styles of tips. It can also be changed for a custom mold that's custom shaped to your ear. So that would take care of the different levels of hearing loss. Therefore, the Widex Moment hearing aids would be appropriate for most levels and types of hearing loss. There's two ways to control the settings, changing programs, changing volume on your hearing aids. Number one would be touching buttons behind your ear. And number two would be connecting the hearing aids via Bluetooth to your smartphone to be able to make those adjustments through an app.
The Widex Moment app has a three-star rating out of 60 reviews on the Apple store. I have used the app myself. It is a solid app. Overall, the experience with the smartphone apps are very positive for the Widex Moment. If you didn't have your smartphone or you want to make a quick adjustment to the hearing aids your audiologists can program this button that sits behind your ear. It can be programmed to change the volume and programs just by tapping that button on either side behind your ear. If you have tinnitus and you're looking for help managing tinnitus with sound therapy or masking, then the Widex hearing aids come with what is called Zen tones as well as different other types of tinnitus sound therapy. Overall, they have a good rating for tinnitus features inside of the Widex hearing aids. I would like to introduce a concept that is becoming more and more important in today's modern age for hearing aids. And that's a feature called remote care. To get the Widex Moment hearing aids, you would have to go to an audiology clinic. And if you do, you can ask them to initialize or activate remote care of the hearing aids. Overall, the remote care feature is available through Widex. However, they make you wear a neck loop. So it's not as easy as some of the other companies out there. Thank you for watching so far, for the next parts of this video, we'll cover the pros, the cons and then some other hearing aids that are worth considering that we review here with HearWeb.
Now let's start with the pros of the Widex Moment hearing aids. Pro number one is that they have very fast sound processing. This recently came out with this device with Widex is that they have something called pure sound. Which has minimal signal delay in the processing of sound. When I'm wearing a hearing aid and sound enters the microphone of the hearing aids, there is a computer delay to process that sound and then present it into your ears. So following this theory here that means if we reduce the amount of time it takes for the hearing aid to process sound, then it can potentially improve the quality of listening and make it sound more natural. So pure sound with Widex is designed to do that. The second pro with these hearing aids are that they are a small rechargeable hearing aid. Let me show you how they look behind my ear to get a sense of how big they really are. So putting them on first they slide just behind my ear and then they fit nicely. You can see on the side here there's just that little wire piece. And then if I turn around you can see how it looks behind my ear. It's very small at the top of my ear you would typically select a color that matches your hair or your skin tone so it blends in nicely. The third pro is that they are a respectable hearing aid for Bluetooth connectivity, streaming, connecting to your smartphone app to make adjustments, streaming YouTube videos from the hearing aids that you can listen to them coming from your phone. Widex has a good for that kind of connectivity. And after testing them these hearing aids do quite well in that regard. The fourth pro about getting the Widex Moment hearing aids is that you are typically working with an audiologist to get these hearing aids. Premium hearing aids are sold in audiology clinics. And that means you're not only paying for the devices but professional services that go into them. The audiology clinic can provide additional benefits that the hearing aid alone couldn't do, particularly how to fine tune them, to make sure that they're optimized for your hearing loss, your needs who you want to hear better and where and then of course the actual sound and acoustical properties of your ear.
Now let's transition into the cons of these hearing aids. Con number one is that these hearing aids fit quite easily into their recharging station but this recharging station doesn't close. So you have to take the hearing aids out for this piece to close on top. Therefore, this recharging station is not very portable. So if you were to travel with these hearing aids then what you would probably do is take them out of the recharging station and to use this kind of carrying case and put the hearing aids in the carrying case. Let's say if you were going on a trip on a weekend trip or if you were just in the ocean or going for a swim you would take the hearing aids off put them in this carrying case. Unfortunately, the recharging case itself doesn't close I would have liked to see that with the design of these hearing aids. The second con is that premium hearing aids are expensive. These hearing aids are typically in the range of the most expensive hearing aids available. Not just Widex, but the other companies that are similar to them, whether that be Phonak, ReSound, Oticon, et cetera those are all typically premium hearing aids. Now they come in different price levels but overall getting them through an audiologist means that you're going to have to pay thousands of dollars. At HearWeb, we imagine some of you are wondering about your different options for hearing aids. I'm sure you also value the professional and how their services can help optimize their hearing aids. But if you have to pay thousands of dollars more for that then maybe you're considering other options.
With our videos on this YouTube channel we strive to give independent reviews of all of the hearing aids out there. From some of the more expensive premium hearing aids, all the way down to the entry-level affordable online hearing aids. Check the description of this video for the most up-to-date prices on all the hearing aids that we cover. And you will find a link to HearWeb.com where those are listed. Additionally, I wanted to bring in some other competitors or different hearing aid technology that if you're considering the Widex Moment you also might be interested in. The first is the Phonak Paradise hearing aids other premium hearing aids that have a great reputation. The second is the Audicus Wave hearing aids significantly more affordable and they are online rechargeable, Bluetooth hearing aids. And the third hearing aids to consider checking out are the Engage Enlite hearing aids by Lucid Audio. Those are a more do it yourself job for significantly less than the others listed so far. We made full review videos of all of those hearing aids. So make sure to subscribe to HearWeb on this YouTube channel and check out HereWeb.com, to learn more. My name is Dr. Ben Thompson.
